2023 Croquet Cabernet Sauvignon
From our Croquet Vineyard on the north side of Howell Mountain — named for the croquet court on the property — where the vines are planted on a steep slope at 1,785 feet in Aiken loam, a rich red clay soil that drains slowly and makes the vines work. The exposure runs warmer than neighboring Cold Springs, and you can taste it. Oak leads the aromatics here, with cedar, vanilla, and tobacco, then the middle opens into classic ripe cherry fruit over a big tannic backbone. Hand-harvested in the cool morning hours, hand-sorted before and after the destemmer, and aged 20 months in 85% new French oak, with Winemaker Laura Barrett selecting the best barrels for this single-vineyard bottling. CCOF certified organic. Big, bold, unmistakably Howell Mountain — open it with a ribeye, a wild mushroom risotto, or a slow-cooked ragù.
