The Story Behind the Label: Valle di Sotto Vineyard Proprietary Red Wine

Nestled in Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll District, Clif Family’s Valle di Sotto Vineyard embodies our commitment to sustainability and excellence. Our Clif Family Valle di Sotto Vineyard Proprietary Red Wine reflects this exceptional site, offering a bold, balanced, and age-worthy blend crafted from the finest Bordeaux varietals.

Why Blend from Valle di Sotto?

Valle di Sotto, meaning “the valley below” in Italian, honors our Howell Mountain vineyards that rise above the valley floor. The Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley's unique microclimate produces Cabernet Sauvignon with remarkable depth and complexity. Adding Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc enhances the structure, deep color, balanced acidity, and rich fruit flavors.

"I wanted to create a compelling wine that is of the highest quality Cabernet from our Oak Knoll District vineyards. Its beautiful to see the differences between our very best Howell Mountain Cab versus the very best valley floor Cab." - Winemaker Laura Barrett

A Tale of Two Vintages: 2021 vs. 2022

The 2021 vintage benefited from steady ripening, resulting in balanced wines. In contrast, 2022 faced challenges, including an early September heat wave. However, thanks to deep soils, strong canopies, and organic farming, we still produced a wine of outstanding quality. Valle di Sotto’s resilience proves its potential for world-class wines.

Winemaking: The Art of the Blend

Blended wines allow fine-tuned perfection. We start with the best Cabernet Sauvignon, then layer in Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc to refine tannins, acidity, and aromatics. The base blend forms in March after harvest, allowing time for aging and refinement before final adjustments. This careful process creates a seamless, sophisticated wine that is approachable now yet built to age.

"Blenders are so fun!  I have so much great Cabernet to work with, all difference clones and rootstocks.  Then, to add the Cab Franc, Malbec and Merlot is just a dream come true!  I have so much to work with." - Winemaker Laura Barrett Clif Family Winemaker Laura Barrett stands in a vineyard holding a bottle of Clif Family Valle di Sotto Vineyard Proprietary Red Wine.

Pairing & Enjoyment

This Napa Cabernet blend pairs beautifully with rich dishes. Its freshness and structure complement creamy mushroom risotto, while its boldness enhances hearty meats and aged cheeses. Decanting reveals layers of dark fruit, spice, and earthiness.

"I look to craft a supple yet bold Cabernet blend that shows the beauty of the Oak Knoll District - big structure, yet softer than our mountain wines. Deep color, balanced acidity and delicious fruit flavors." - Winemaker Laura Barrett

Aging Potential: Enjoy Now or Cellar for Later

With velvety tannins and vibrant acidity, this wine is enjoyable now and ideal for aging. While it drinks beautifully today, cellaring will enhance its complexity and depth over time.

Sustainable Farming & Regenerative Practices

Our Valle di Sotto Vineyard follows organic and regenerative farming. We use no-till practices, cover cropping, and wildlife habitats with songbird and owl boxes. These efforts promote healthier soils, thriving vines, and better-tasting wines.
