A Napa Grape with a Global Legacy
Malbec, one of the classic Bordeaux varietals, is a rarity in Napa Valley, with only about 575 acres planted (compared to 25,000 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon). Known for its popularity in Argentina, Malbec thrives in our Oak Knoll District vineyard, where the climate and soil conditions bring out its best qualities.
When we first planted Malbec, it was intended as a blending grape for our
Valle di Sotto Proprietary Red Wine. But thanks to Gary Erickson’s vision and enthusiasm, we planted extra rows for a varietally labeled wine—and we’re sure glad we did! With its large berries and excellent tannin structure, Malbec stands out as a wine with incredible color, concentration, and balance.
