Wines To Enjoy On Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday for many of us here in the Napa Valley. After the busy harvest season, it’s the first rest for those of us working in the cellar. It’s the chance at creating a unique spin on a traditional meal. It’s an opportunity to show off our delicious fall and winter wines at the table.

To start, the cooler season ahead doesn’t mean it’s time to put away your summer sippers. I am a true believer that the last of the season’s Rosé is meant for the Thanksgiving table. This delicate pink wine now has 8 months of bottle age and the flavors and aromas have developed into a more complex and delicate pink, perfect for welcoming guests to happy hour.

Clif Family 2018 Rosé of Grenache

Very pale, yet bright pink in color. Fresh watermelon, green apple, juicy peach and jasmine jump from the glass. This cooler vintage offers a mouthful of vibrant acidity that accentuates the fresh fruit on the palate – raspberry, ripe pear, and sour candy watermelon.

Another perfect white wine match for the holiday table is Gewurztraminer. A combination of aromatic fruit and spice, this wine is ideal for pairing at the start of your meal. Consider serving it alongside a winter salad of kale, fresh apples, pumpkin seeds, persimmons and a citrus vinaigrette.

Clif Family 2017 Dry Gewürztraminer

Candied lemon, jasmine, rose petal, clove and honeysuckle. This dry Gewürztraminer shows off a burst of fruit and spice, followed by a rich, textured mid-palate and a backbone of acidity. The wine finishes luscious and long.

As the evening and dinner progress to red wine, we often look to the lighter style reds to pair with turkey. For something fruit driven and elegant, I always serve the Clif Family Grenache, also from Mendocino County. For the more robust palate, our Climber Bordeaux blend is an excellent choice.

Clif Family 2016 Grenache

Elegant and bright with black raspberry, dried strawberries, and crushed stone. Opens with a burst of acidity, followed by a mouthful of bright fruit. Medium body tannic structure with a long and balanced finish.

Clif Family 2016 Climber Red Bordeaux Blend

Balanced and approachable, this blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon explodes with blackberry, blueberry, and ripe plum. With milk chocolate on the entry, the mid-palate has nicely balanced tannins and the wine finishes long and fruit filled.

So, as we cheers and give thanks, be sure there are lots of glasses on the table topped up with our exciting offerings from Clif Family Winery.
